Whitehaven, a town in West Cumbria, sits on the coast between the Lakeland Fells and the glistening waves. It was one of the first towns in England to be "planned," and it features nearly 250 Georgian-style buildings that are now on the National Register of Historic Places as well as some lovely parks and gardens. Beacon Heritage Centre is an excellent resource for learning about the history of the area, and the harbour itself is now a protected natural area. There is a lot to see and do along the coast, including the historic smuggling villages like Ravenglass and the picturesque red sandstone cliffs of St. Bees, which serve as the starting point of Wainwright's famous "Coast to Coast" Walk. At the same time, the Western lakes—Ennerdale, Loweswater, Crummock, Buttermere, and Wastwater—offer a peaceful alternative to the bustle of the coast. With no public roads along its National Trust-owned shoreline, Ennerdale is often considered the quietest of all the lakes.
