The surrounding area is perfect for walking and cycling with many routes providing the chance to enjoy much of the local countryside. For those who prefer to drive, the Northern Dales are waiting to be discovered and visits to medieval Raby Castle with its deer park, Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, High Force Waterfall and Egglestone Hall and Gardens are not to be missed. The surrounding countryside is full of excellent walking opportunities through high, open moorland and pretty wooded valleys. Nearby are the waterfalls of High Force and Cauldron Snout, which are often considered to be amongst the most spectacular sights in the district.
